通訳メモ取りと作業記憶（working memory）の関係

通訳が不安定になるとき、その原因は語彙力や集中力ではないことがあります。
多くの場合、問題は「作業記憶」の使い方にあります。

作業記憶とは、今聞いている情報を一時的に保持しながら、同時に処理するための脳内スペースのことです。

通訳では、
発話を聞き、
意味を理解し、
情報の構造を整理し、
次に出す表現を準備する、
という作業を同時に行っています。

これらはすべて、作業記憶を消費する作業です。

作業記憶はとても小さい

作業記憶の容量は、想像以上に限られています。

内容が少し複雑になるだけで、

数字、
論理関係、
主語、
強調点、
引用、

といった重要な情報が一気に抜け落ちます。

通訳中に起きる訳落ちや誤訳の多くは、ここで発生しています。

これは記憶力の問題ではありません。

作業記憶に無理な負荷をかけていることが原因です。

通訳メモの本当の役割

通訳メモは、覚えるための記録ではありません。

作業記憶にかかる負荷を、
頭の外に逃がすための道具です。

数字や固有名詞、
論理の骨格、
因果関係や対比、

こうした情報をメモに出すことで、

作業記憶を「理解」と「再生」に集中させます。

メモを取らないと何が起きるのか

メモを取らずに聞き続けると、
作業記憶はすぐに飽和します。

その結果、

数字が飛ぶ。
主語を忘れる。
論理の流れが崩れる。
原発話にない言葉を足してしまう。

これらはすべて、
作業記憶の使い方の問題です。

今回使う教材とメモの練習方法

以下では、実際のニュース音声を使って、
作業記憶に負担をかけすぎないメモ取りを体験していきます。

今回は、NHKラジオニュース（ポッドキャスト）から
ひとつニュースを録音教材として使用しました。

まずは、

発話を一通り聞いてください。

次に、
大まかなあらすじが言える程度のメモを取ります。

その後、

録音を5〜7程度のまとまりで止めながら、
そこまでの短い記憶をもとにメモを作ります。

その際、
「覚えていれば負担になりすぎる情報」を
どれだけメモに移せるかかを確認してください。

下に示しているのは、
同じ発話を使って実際に取ったメモと、
そのメモから再生された英語の例です。

ここでは、
最終的な英語通訳の完成度を見る必要はありません。

どの情報がメモに置かれ、
どの情報が作業記憶に残されているか。

その対応関係に注目して、
メモそのものを観察してみてください。

通訳メモに「正解の形」はない

前回も述べましたが、通訳メモの取り方に、決まったルールはありません。
この形でなければならない、という正解は存在しません。

ただし、
自分にとって「どの情報がメモに必要なのか」を認識せずに取ったメモは、
実際の通訳ではほとんど役に立ちません。

メモは、
書いた量や見た目ではなく、
通訳時に作業記憶の負担を減らせているかで評価されるものです。

私が英字でメモを取る理由
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

私は試行錯誤を重ねた結果、
英日通訳でも日英通訳でも、
まずメモは英字で取るようにしています。

理由は単純です。

日本語には、
漢字、ひらがな、カタカナ、ローマ字があり、
どれを使うか迷う余地があるからです。

その迷い自体が、
作業記憶に余分な負荷をかけます。

英字で統一してしまえば、
迷う必要がなくなります。

「英語の単語が出てこない」問題
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

よく、
「英語の単語がとっさに出てこない」
という人がいます。

この問題には、二つの側面があります。

＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝
問題① 英語が瞬時に立ち上がらない
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

まず一つ目は、
英語の単語が瞬時に思い浮かばないこと自体が問題である、
という点です。

たとえば、
「ウクライナ」という言葉を聞いて、
英語でどう言うのかを考えているようでは、通訳はできません。

英語では Ukraine。
発音は「ユークレイン（juːˈkreɪn）」です。

スペリングをすべて正確に思い出せなくても構いません。
UKra. 程度で止めておいても、
自分で分かれば十分です。

私は、
長い単語は4〜5文字程度で止めることが多いです。

肩書きを書くのはなぜか

たとえば「ゼレンスキー大統領」であれば、
Pres. Zel. と書きます。

発話者が「ゼレンスキー氏」と言ったのであれば、
Mr. Zel. とします。

ここまで書いておかないと、
あとで
「大統領と言っていたのか」
「氏と言っていたのか」
を思い出す負担が発生します。

こうした余分な負荷を、
作業記憶にかけない工夫も、
メモ取りの重要な役割です。

問題② 聞きながら英語を思い浮かべる

もう一つの問題は、
発話を聞いている段階で、
英語を思い浮かべることです

私は、
発話を聞いている最中に、
頭の中ではどんどん英語を思い浮かべています。

言い換えれば、
「これを使おう」という英語の単語や表現は、
すでにその時点で決めています。

意味を先に押さえる
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

たとえば、
「市民の生活は一層厳しさを増しています」
と聞こえてきたら、

life
increasing

といった単語は、
自然に頭の中に浮かんでいます。

厳しい言い方に聞こえるかもしれませんが、
これができなければ、
発話を聞き終えた直後に通訳することはできません。

メモと最終表現は一致しなくていい

メモには、
とりあえず severe と書いていても、
実際の通訳では
becoming increasingly harsher
と言うかもしれません。

それで構いません。

大事なのは、
表現のスタイルが変わっても、
意味が変わらないことです。

メモは、
完成した英語を書く場所ではありません。

意味を固定し、
作業記憶を守るための装置です。

メモは「自分の脳の使い方」を映す

メモの取り方は人それぞれです。

しかし、
自分にとって必要な情報が何かを理解せずに取ったメモは、
通訳では機能しません。

メモは、
「自分がどうやって理解し、どうやって再生するか」
をそのまま映し出します。

だからこそ、
実際の教材を使って、
自分のメモを検証する必要があります。

 

メモは何をしているのか

このメモは、文章をそのまま書き写すためのものではありません。
発話の中にある情報を、意味の単位ごとに分解し、構造として並べ直すためのメモです。

最初に来るのは、
「何が起きているのか」という全体像です。

ここでは、
寒波
停電
市民生活への影響
という三つの要素を、因果関係でつないでいます。

この構造があるからこそ、

英語では
is being hit

という自然な流れで文を組み立てることができます。

数字と情報源は必ず外に出す

次のメモでは、
気象情報という別のまとまりを扱っています。

Daytime highs → minus 11 degrees

Local media

ここで重要なのは、
「誰が言っているか」
「数字はいくつか」
「いつまでか」

をすべてメモに出している点です。

これにより、
According to …
are forecast to reach …
by the 4th

という報道文の定型構造が、そのまま再生できます。

具体例は「事実」だけを残す

市民の発言の部分では、
感情ではなく、事実だけを切り出しています。

Electricity → about two hours
Four hours = “good day”
Gas heater → only way
Family gather

このメモから再生されている英語は、
通訳者の評価や感想を足していません。
発話にあった事実関係を、そのまま文に戻しています。

これが、通訳で最も重要なポイントです。

固有名詞と数は作業記憶に残さない

「Points of Invincibility」や
「10,000 facilities」
「Kazakhstan」

といった情報は、
覚えようとせず、すべてメモに出しています。

こうすることで、
通訳時の作業記憶は
「意味の流れ」
「次に来る内容」
に集中できます。

評価語 (通訳者の意見等）は入れない。

39歳の男性のコメントでは、
During the war
All we can do
= go back home

と、意味だけを固定しています。

英語では
all they can do is go back home
と再生されていますが、
耐える、我慢する、といった言葉は足していません。

メモの段階で意味を正しく固定しているからです。

後半は「発言者＋要点」だけで十分

ゼレンスキー大統領やペスコフ報道官の発言も、
全文を覚える必要はありません。

この程度の情報があれば、
誰が
どこで
何を指摘したか
は再生できます。

このメモが示していること

このメモが示しているのは、
「うまい英語を書く方法」ではありません。

・どの情報をメモに出すか
・どの情報を作業記憶に残すか
・どこまでを意味として固定するか

その判断が、
そのまま通訳文の質につながる、ということです。

メモは、
通訳の下書きではありません。
通訳者の思考そのものを可視化したものです。

このメモから、
どのように英語が立ち上がっているかを追ってみることで、
自分にとって「本当に必要なメモ」が何かが見えてきます。
